About Retro Bowl

Retro Bowl puts you in the dual role of head coach and quarterback for an American football franchise. Instead of playing full games, you take direct control only when your team has the ball, executing passes and running plays in a fast-paced, 8-bit arcade style. Between games, the focus shifts to the front office, where you manage the salary cap, draft rookies, hire coordinators, and deal with player morale.

The core loop is incredibly satisfying because it balances quick, action-packed matches with long-term roster building. Because you don't control the defense directly, building a championship team means making tough choices in the draft and investing your coaching credits wisely to ensure your simulated defense can get stops. It runs flawlessly right in the browser with nothing to install.

Controls

  • Pass: Click (or tap) and drag backward from the quarterback to aim your passing arc, then release to throw.
  • Run: While holding the ball with the QB, swipe backwards to scramble. With a runner, swipe up or down to dodge tackles.
  • Dive: Swipe forward while running to dive for extra yardage or step out of bounds to stop the clock.

Tips

  • Prioritize a good quarterback and receiver combo: Since you control the offense, having a QB with high throw accuracy and a fast receiver is the easiest way to guarantee points.
  • Manage the clock: In close games, try to score with almost no time left on the clock so the opposing team doesn't have a chance to answer.
  • Don't neglect the defense: Even though you don't play defense manually, having a 4-star or 5-star defensive roster is crucial for winning championships.
  • Trade aging stars: Before a high-priced veteran's contract expires and they start declining, trade them for valuable first-round draft picks to keep your roster young and under the salary cap.

Retro Bowl FAQ

Can I play defense in Retro Bowl?
You only control the team during offensive possessions. Your defense plays automatically in the background based on the star ratings of your defensive roster and your defensive coordinator.
How does the salary cap work?
Every player on your roster requires a salary. If your total roster salary exceeds the cap, you won't be able to sign free agents or draft new players until you trade or cut existing players.
Can I switch teams?
Yes, at the end of each season, you will receive job offers from other franchises based on your coaching performance. You can choose to stay and build a dynasty or rebuild a new team.
