Classic Chess is a straightforward digital take on the 1,500-year-old board game: full standard rules, a clean board with no clutter around it, and two ways to play. Controls

Tap or click the piece you want to move, then tap or click the square you want to move it to. That's the entire control scheme, on desktop or mobile.

Tips

• Get your knights and bishops out before you move your queen — developing minor pieces early gives you more options and keeps your queen safe from being chased around the board.
• Control the four center squares early. Pieces posted in the center attack more of the board than pieces stuck on the edge.
• Castle within the first several moves if you can. An uncastled king in the center is the easiest target to attack.
• Before you move, check whether it hangs a piece to a fork, pin, or simple capture — most losses at this level come from missing a one-move threat, not from deep strategy.
